Style | The Fuel EXe 9.5 is a new kind of e-mountain bike that bridges the divide between pedal-assist and traditional bikes. It features a carbon frame and a compact motor that keeps the ride light, lively and quiet. Get the benefit of pedal assist on long climbs, and the playful feel of a traditional mountain bike on descents. It's built up with a 150mm RockShox Gold RL fork that makes quick work of rock gardens, and 140mm of plush RockShox Deluxe Select+ rear suspension for a smooth ride and small bump compliance. While other electric bikes keep chasing more power, higher torque and bigger batteries, the Fuel EXe brings natural-feeling assist with a system that's so compact and quiet, you might forget it's there. It's one of the lightest eMTBs on the market , so it handles more like a regular trail bike, but with a smooth-feeling boost that's not as intense as a high-power rig like Rail or Powerfly. Trek partnered with German robotics manufacturer TQ to develop the Fuel EXe hand-in-hand with their new HPR 50 motor. Their patented harmonic pin ring transmission is smaller, quieter and more dependable than traditional e-bike motors that use gears and belts. Once you experience the serene sound and feel of riding Fuel EXe, e-biking will never be the same! The 360 watt hour battery provides power for around four hours. It's concealed in the downtube, but it's still super easy to remove. It takes just two hours (approx.) to charge. There's also an optional 160 watt hour Range Extender that fits in the bottle cage (included with Fuel EXe 9.5) for an easy 40% increase in range. Toggle between the three assistance modes with the sleek and simple remote. All three modes are dynamic (like the Bosch eMTB mode) and tuned by Trek for mountain biking. There's also a walk assist function. The Fuel EXe's high contrast display is neatly integrated and protected in the top tube. Check your assist level, range, speed and more at a glance. There's a new Trek Central app that seamlessly connects with Fuel EXe for customised motor tuning, activity tracking and real-time range calculations. Download the app for iOS in the Apple App Store or for Android in the Google Play store and follow the prompts. You can also pair most Bluetooth or ANT+ cycling computers to Fuel EXe. The Fuel EXe rolls on 29-inch wheels with 140mm of rear travel paired with a 150mm fork. The geometry is fine-tuned for stability on steep, high-speed descents and an efficient pedalling position for climbing. Fuel EXe is mullet-compatible. Run a 27.5" rear wheel for better bike-to-body clearance and more agile handling. It's right for you if... You want a trail bike that's ready to ride everywhere, and gives you a little extra fuel on the ascents. You don't want to sacrifice the nimble feel of a traditional trail bike for a beefy motor, and prefer a refined assist that feels - and sounds - natural underneath you. The tech you get An OCLV Mountain Carbon frame with a fully encased 360 Wh battery, and TQ harmonic pin ring transmission with a smart charging port, integrated LED display and discreet handlebar remote. 150mm RockShox 35 Gold RL fork with DebonAir spring and Motion Control damper, and 140mm RockShox Deluxe Select+ rear suspension. Plus, tubeless-ready wheels and tyres, and 12-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain. Highlights: - You get discreet power when you want it, and the nimble feel of a traditional mountain bike wherever you roll - Its tiny-but-mighty TQ transmission is tuned for the trail, keeping things quiet (0.12 Tonality units - barely perceivable) so you can stay in the moment, and ramps up power with you for a natural ride feel - The smart charge port, sleek integrated display and discreet controls keep the bike looking and feeling like a traditional mountain bike - Its 150mm of buttery-smooth front travel pairs with 140mm of rear suspension to eat up rocks and roots for a ride that's ready to tackle anything - You'll be able to add on a range extender when you want a little extra fuel in the tank for big days on the bike For more information about the TQ HPR50 system visit trekbikes.com. mbr Gear of the Year 2022, mbr magazine, January 2023: "Designed around the new 50Nm TQ motor, the EXe is largely indistinguishable from a regular trail bike. Stand the EXe next to the new Fuel EX and, bar the display on the top tube, the bikes look like identical twins. They even share similar stats and build kits, both frames pumping out 140mm travel married to 150mm forks. And given how quiet the motor is, no one will ever accuse you of cheating again. ...Trek offers a comprehensive range of EXe models, with the EXe starting at £6400. It shares the same full-carbon frame, TQ motor and removable 360Wh battery as the top-end bike, but obviously it won't be as light due to the more affordable build kit. The ride quality will be similar though, and that's what really sets the EXe apart. It feels like a regular trail bike, just way more capable. You still get lots of assistance on the climbs, and while pedalling above the 15.5mph assistance limit isn't completely drag free, you don't hit a wall like you do on a full powered e-bike." Trek Fuel EXe review, Bike Rumor, October 2022 (see here for full review): "The Trek Fuel EXe is a bit of an outlier in the current e-MTB market. Most e-mountain bikes fall into one of two categories: High-powered, long-travel beasts, or lightweight, short-travel models with lower-power systems. The Fuel EXe sits in the middle, with 150/140mm travel and generous, adjustable trail geometry, and the new TQ HPR50 motor that's ultra-quiet with moderate output. And it works, delivering a balanced, capable bike and an extremely fun ride experience. The Trek Fuel EXe e-mountain bike rides like a great trail bike, with a lightweight TQ system providing just the right amount of power and keeping the handling and balance in that sweet spot." |
