Style | The Croix De Fer 40 is the rugged, dependable yet playful elder brother of the Croix De Fer range. The Reynolds 725 tubeset, Chromoly thru-axle fork, 1x12 GRX drivetrain and dependable rubber make it a true adventure machine. Long 200km+ days, quick technical loops, on-road-offroad commutes or an evening blast, the Croix De Fer 40 is geared for anything. Croix De Fer has been a staple in the Genesis range since 2009, with the original description of "drop bars don't always mean tarmac". It's fair to say that the industry has become wise to this fact since then, with "gravel" very much being the in thing. However, we've always believed that the Croix De Fer is much more than that and its all-round capabilities across nearly all surfaces are what makes it so popular. The latest offering shares some similarities to the original design, but over time with new technologies and components becoming available to us, the bike has evolved into what you see today. The long-standing icon of the Genesis range returns with subtle changes improving on what is already a firm favourite for many riders. The most obvious difference is the fresh new silhouette. Dropped seat stays allowed Genesis to tune the vertical compliance when in the saddle giving Croix De Fer a new, smooth, ride feel. Paired with the new seat stay location, the ovalised top tube shape, originally developed for tuning the ride of the Volare road race frame, now adds additional vertical compliance to take that edge off uneven terrain. Maximum tyre clearance is also increased to 700c x 47mm, opening the door to a whole new world of modern tyres. Timeless Style Combining a refined steel tube set with a modern silhouette, the Croix De Fer evolves into a truly modern gravel bike. It has a rugged, smooth riding Reynolds 725 chromoly steel frame. It's heated to around 1600 degrees Fahrenheit where by a structural change in the steels' crystal lattice occurs creating a stronger, more uniform orientation. This is following by quenching - rapid cooling - to lock-in the structural change. As it's stronger less can be used, so thinner butts are the order of the day, helping to achieve a lighter overall frame weight and livelier ride without compromising strength. Big Clearance With maximum tyre clearance of 700c x 47mm, the Croix De Fer can be adapted to suit a wide range of conditions. Equipped with Amplitude G100 tubeless-ready wheels with a 26mm internal rim width and pre-installed tubeless tape. Tubeless ready Maxxis Rambler 45mm tyres - a true year-round, go-anywhere tread pattern that isn't limiting on smoother roads - complete a capable package. Dropped Stay A fresh dropped seat stay design and a new ovalised top tube developed from our road racing heritage add vertical compliance aiding comfort for long days in the saddle. These updates bring a subtle modern aesthetic to the Croix De Fer's otherwise traditional silhouette. Internal Routing Croix De Fer 40 features customisable internal cable routing which gives a clean and consistent aesthetic no matter the choice of components. The steel fork features internal dynamo routing to keep cables protected and there is routing for easy installation of a dropper seat post. Carry All With numerous mounting points including highly versatile bottle positions, the Croix De Fer looks svelte with just a pair of bottles for a short ride and tidy when fully loaded for a week long journey. Anything Cage mounts on the fork legs and rack mounts on the frame further expand carrying capability. Gravel Oriented Componentry Croix De Fer is equipped to perform right out of the box with considered component choices. The smooth shifting Shimano GRX 1x12 drivetrain saves weight while still delivering the gear ratios you desire for gravel riding, longer adventures and urban riding. The simplicity of a single chainring also improves mud clearance and chain retention for when trails get techy. Powerful GRX hydraulic disc brakes help you stop on a sixpence. Genesis Croix De Fer review, Cycling Weekly magazine, August 2024: "I took the new Croix de Fer on a lengthy ride around the Hafren Forest in Wales prior to its launch, and I was thoroughly impressed. About the 725 [tubeset] model, complete with a single-ring Shimano GRX 12-speed set-up, we covered singletrack to fire roads. The bike provides great stability and comfort. Genesis has brought the Croix de Fer up to date, both aesthetically and from a handling point of view." |
