The perfect ingredients for your next trail session - and it's a looker too. Grin-inducing progressive geometry paired with a tough frame and long travel fork to soak up punishment make it ready to go.

The BIG.TRAIL 600 is the top dog of Merida's progressive trail hardtail lineup. The third generation of the trail hardtail builds on an award-winning heritage - and it turns things up a notch. It's more capable and fun than ever, thanks to new geometry that boosts the descending ability to scary-fast levels and the climbing ability up to mountain goat. Plus, the show is as good as the go, with sleeker and more refined looks, plus extra frame protection to keep it that way.

Highlights:
- Progressive trail bike geometry with long reach, slack head angle and steep seat angle
- Durable double butted aluminium frame
- Extremely low standover height paired with long travel dropper post
- Shimano 4-piston XT brakes with 203mm rotors
- RockShox Pike 140mm trail fork
- 1x12 Shimano Deore drivetrain
- 29er wheels specced with Maxxis Minion DHR II EXO 2.5" front and Maxxis Dissector EXO+ 2.4" rear tyre
- Multiple fixing points for bottles and other equipment including the BIG.TRAIL specific rear mudguard (available separately)

The BIG.TRAIL is back and better than ever! Hailed by the international mountain bike press as one of the best trail hardtails around, BIG.TRAIL is redesigned so it goes up, down and along even faster - which obviously means more fun. With updated, progressive geometry, the new BIG.TRAIL builds on an incredibly successful heritage, with a slack head angle and extended reach helping tame the gnarliest trails and a steeper seat angle that makes climbing up to do it again a breeze. It has a slicker and tricker look and improved frame protection too, so it'll stay looking good for longer. Join the BIG.TRAIL family and enjoy hassle-free trail fun in spades. Available from Short to XLong, perfect for finding your preferred size and reach options.

Details
RACELITE 61 ALUMINIUM
Merida use a minimum of 6061 grade aluminium on all bikes. It's particularly well suited to being shaped with our hydroforming and technoforming processes, which allow us to vary the wall thickness to create double-butted tubing and complex frame shapes. It's also an alloy that welds easily, and once it has been carefully heat treated to maximise strength, it means we can create strong and lightweight bicycle frames for you to enjoy.

INTERNAL CABLE ROUTING
Running the brake and gear cables inside the frame protects them from the elements, gives a clean and neat look and can offer aerodynamic advantages.

X-TAPER HEADTUBE
Steering precision is vital to safe and confident handling, and the X-TAPER HEADTUBE allows us to significantly boost this precision. A larger headset diameter at the bottom paired with a smaller one at the top helps to deal with the strains modern riding and equipment can put on the headtube, all without adding unnecessary weight. It allows tapered forks to be fitted with ease and delivers precise and confidence-inspiring steering.

Merida Big Trail 600 review, BikeRadar, July 2024 (see here for the full review):
"With a few excellent spec choices and geometry that leaves little to be desired, Merida has done a cracking job with the new Big.Trail. Its progressive shape ensures it's no slouch on descents, while chunky rubber boosts grip and wards off punctures, and powerful brakes further your control. It's no slugger on the climbs, though, because the pedalling position is on-point and the rear tyre, though sturdy, rolls fast.

If you like the direct feel of a hardtail, Merida's well-proportioned Big.Trail should be up there on your shopping list. While value is subjective, you get a well-shaped alloy frame with plenty of versatility, along with a solid parts package. The Pike fork works well, as do the Shimano gears. The powerful brakes and well-considered tyres are spec highlights. On the trail, the geometry balances the needs of riders looking to cruise blues, as well as tackle more serious terrain well.

All in all, it's a solid package that should be a stellar companion for all-mountain adventures."

Verdict
Up and down, severe or smooth, Merida's updated Big.Trail 600 is an impressive performer

Merida Big Trail 600 review, Bike Perfect / MBR magazine, July 2024 (see here or here for the full reviews):
"Extremely capable and enjoyable rad riding hardtail that's also fully loaded with super reliable kit and everyday utility features."

Verdict
If you want to go on a forum to complain, then yeah I'd rather the Big Trail had normal cable routing and space for a bigger rear tire to reduce the game of two halves impact response. The riotously enjoyable, yet fail-forgiving ride of the radical geometry and compliant yet controlled front end outweighs those niggles by many multiples on genuinely big trails though. Both frame and parts pick are loaded with solid choices and smart details that really elevate the complete package too.

The death of Nukeproof and Ragley has dramatically reduced the options for affordable but properly radical hardtails, which makes the reshaped Merida even more welcome. You get the same frame on the £2,000 600 version here, the £1,500 Big Trail 500 (with a RockShox Psylo fork), and £1,100 300 version (Suntour XCR34 fork). Whatever model you buy, the fact it's a full-feature daily driver for commuting or utility use potentially makes it even better value.

Merida Big Trail 600 review, off.road.cc, November 2024 (see here for the full review):
"The Merida Big.Trail 600 is a progressive hardtail with exceptionally modern and very wisely-picked geometry. As such, it will be appreciated by all levels of riders while kitted with a spec sheet that's nearly impossible to moan about."

Verdict
As far as trail hardtails go, the Merida Big.Trail 600 sets a new standard for fun for the money. Your investment of £2,000 gets you an incredibly well-sorted mountain bike that's as capable as you are brave. Its specification includes everything you really need and nothing you don't while being more than ready for upgrades should you want to eke out every inch of performance possible.
