Description
Look's new X-Track mountain-bike pedal is constructed around a heavy-duty mechanism, is resistant to the negative effects of coming into contact with various external factors (rocks, roots, mud...), and provides consistent and reliable performance over time.
The spindle, equipped with a double weather-resistant seal, is designed to withstand the very worst conditions you may encounter during your rides. Look are dedicated to the principle that fewer hassles mean more time to ride, and therefore, more fun.

Technology
Look X-Track Technology
Power Transfer:
All the energy you produce is transferred to your MTB through your pedals. Their role, is therefore, crucial.
Look's objective in designing the X-Track was to enable the most efficient transfer of rider power possible. Thus the weight/contact surface ratio was chosen as the most important factor.
Generally speaking, the greater the contact surface, the more efficiently energy is transferred. On the other hand, the greater the contact surface, the more the pedal will weigh.
The challenge faced by the engineers was therefore, to identify the zones that are useful for energy transmission and then optimise the pedal design in order to limit any that are unused. The result is the X-Track has the best weight to contact surface ratio on the market.
Lateral Contact Support
Lateral Contact Support:
Lateral contact support guides your foot in finding your pedal and provides you a point of contact even if you have not yet engaged the cleat. This wide contact area prevents your foot from sliding on the pedal body and offers consistent and reassuring support.
Mechanism Geometry
Mechanism Geometry:
The mechanism works regardless of external conditions (in the mud, forces are significantly different from those encountered when dry) as there's greater space to allow the removal of mud, grit and sand. These zones give the user a constant and stable feeling of being securely clipped in, in all conditions.

- Usage: XC Competition and Leisure
- Body: Aluminium
- Axle: Chromoly +
Look axles are only approved after a rotational test of 2 million cycles at 100 rpm with a load of 90 kg on the centre of the pedal and an eccentric rotation (which creates stress on each revolution).
This is equivalent to a sprint of 1700 watts at 100 rpm for 333 hours! This test is 20 times much more demanding than the current standard, the ISO 4210.
- Intuitive positioning, easy to engage
- Adjustable tension (6-14Nm)
- Contact surface area: 350mm2
- Platform width: 57mm
- Adjustable spring tension
- Pedal and cleats stack height: 16.8mm

X-Track Pedal RangeX-TrackComparison

Look X-Track pedals review, Cycling Weekly magazine, March 2018:

Pros:
- Quality build
- Adjustable cleat tension
- SPD cleat compatible

Cons:
- A bit more prone to clogging than more open designs, but no more so than Shimano pedals
- Black anodising wears off quickly

Verdict:
The Look X-Track pedal is a good alternative to Shimano SPDs. It has a quality look and feel, adjustable release tension and a positive engagement and hold on the cleat. It feels as if it's built to last, with quality hardware and robust-feeling bearings, although the black anodising on the side plates wears off quickly.

Score 9

Look X-Track pedals review, MBUK magazine, January 2020:
"These are the bottom-rung pedals in the X-Track range and weigh a relatively hefty 394g. If you can live with the heft of the basic models, you're getting a truly superb set of pedals for the (very reasonable) price.
They sport a top-notch alloy body, complete with an impressively supportive platform that gives even more flexible trail shoes a decent boost in stability. What's more, the bearings emerged from our testing still spinning smoothly and feel like they should last and last.
Compatibility with Shimano cleats makes life a little easier when seeking out spares or if you've got different pedals on different bikes. Overall, the X-Tracks are really solid performers with a polished entry and release feel that's way above their pay grade."

Verdict:
For £40, you really can't go wrong with these top-quality, consistently excellent, Shimano-compatible pedals.
