Every detail of the Emonda line, from frame design to each component choice on every model, serves the same audacious goal: to create the lightest line of production road bikes ever offered.
The entire Emonda line is unbelievably light, with sensational ride-tuned balance and handling that elevate Trek ride performance to a whole new level.
Not only did Trek set out to build the lightest production road line but also the best riding road bike Trek has ever offered. For this, Trek called upon its portfolio of world-class athletes, the riders of Trek Factory Racing and other pros. For three years, numerous iterations of the Emonda were put to the pavement before the development team landed on the perfect formula.
Direct mount brakes connect directly to the frame to reduce redundant parts and increase overall braking performance, as well as reducing weight and allowing for more tyre clearance.
- Ultra lightweight: Emonda is the ultimate lightweight road racing machine, pushing the boundaries of what's possible for bicycle weight and ride performance.
- 500 Series OCLV Carbon technology: Nobody does carbon better than Trek. Only with Trek's OCLV process can the complete bike system be fully integrated to create the lightest bike in the world.
Emonda SL frame (56cm, painted): 1091g
Emonda SL 5 carbon fork (painted): 436g
- Ride-tuned performance: Emonda elevates Trek ride performance to a whole new level. Custom ride-tuned OCLV Carbon frame provides the perfect balance of stiffness and weight. Each tube shape is optimised to maximise ride performance.
- Lifetime warranty: Trek backs the lightest production road bike in the world with the best warranty in the world.
- Complete groupsets: Every Emonda model comes with matching chain, cassette, shifters, derailleurs, crank, brakes, everything. The Emonda SL 5 features full Shimano 105 componentry.
Upgrades from Emonda ALR 6:
- Ultralight 500 Series OCLV Carbon frame
- Shimano direct mount brakes
- Ultra lightweight
When designing Emonda, the goal was simple: Design the lightest line of road bikes in the world. Emonda comes from the French verb emonder - to prune and trim away - and Trek held true to its meaning.
- Size-Specific Ride Tuned Performance
Utilising Trek's extensive engineering resources and carbon expertise, the R&D team undertook the most stringent and sophisticated frame tube optimisation project in Trek's history - one that's three years in the making. The result of focusing on each strand of carbon, every minute detail is a line of bikes blessed with frames that are the absolute lightest in their class, with the pinnacle being the Emonda SLR frame that comes in at 690 grams.
Trek have been ahead of the size-specific curve since 1992, when OCLV carbon was first introduced. Since 2008 Trek have been able to control the laminate on EVERY part of the frame, and this is continued on every carbon road bike Trek produce today. Using FEA (Finite Element Analysis), bench testing, and ride testing with pro teams, Emonda represents the absolute pinnacle of Trek's tube shaping expertise.
- OCLV Carbon Integration
Nobody knows carbon like Trek. Only with the OCLV carbon process can a company fully integrate a complete bike system to create the lightest road bike line in the world. It started with what Trek do best, build the lightest frameset, in Waterloo, WI. The next step was to compliment it with the lightest available rideable and reliable components. When opportunities for further reduction were discovered, they were taken and new parts were built.
- 500 Series OCLV Carbon
Provides best in class weight, strength and stiffness. OCLV is Trek's patented carbon production process. Optimum Compaction (OC) means the carbon material is densely compressed, achieving the optimal fibre-to-resin ratio to maximize strength and minimize weight. Low Void (LV) means the carbon has almost no microscopic gaps between carbon layers, achieving a strength that exceeds even aerospace standards.
500 Series OCLV achieves a superb balance of light weight, strength, and stiffness that's perfectly suited to the sophisticated frame technologies that distinguish Trek frames.
Trek minimise overall frame weight by using precisely the right amount of material, no more, no less, at every point of the frame for optimal performance and strength. This level of frame refinement requires the unique mix of ultra-high-quality raw materials and exacting manufacturing only Trek can provide.
- E2 headtube and fork
The E2 head tube tapers from a 1.5" lower bearing to a 1-1/8" upper bearing, and is wider side to side than front to back. This asymmetric steering system minimises weight while maximising power transfer and keeping the fork stiffer under cornering loads. Result: a more powerful and confident ride.
Wider is better. BB90 is the widest bottom bracket available on a road bike. This Trek-exclusive carbon BB makes the frame lighter, stiffer, and quicker to accelerate.
BB90 eliminates the need for extra inserts and parts in the bottom bracket/frame junction. Fewer parts mean a lighter frame. And a lighter frame means a faster ride.
- Ride Tuned seatmast
Ultimate comfort and light weight.
Trek's Ride Tuned seatmast is the lightest, most comfortable solution for day-in, day-out performance and comfort. The no-cut design eliminates traditional seatpost clamping forces, so less material is used at the seat tube junction, resulting in a lighter frame.
Additionally, most seatmast systems have to be cut, leaving little or no room for adjustability. The Ride Tuned seatmast system has more than 10cm of adjustment, making it the most adjustable system on the market.
- Tubeless Ready
These TLR rims will allow you to take the plunge to a tubeless tyre system. Advantages of going tubeless include: a lighter set-up, reduced chance of punctures, and the ability to run grippier, lower tyre pressures without having to worry about pinch punctures.
- DuoTrap S compatible
DuoTrap S seamlessly integrates a Bluetooth/ANT+ sensor into the frame with no added aerodynamic drag. It allows you to measure speed, distance, and cadence on your computer or smartphone. It works with all the major ANT+ wireless technology players, including Bontrager, Garmin, Bryton, PowerTap, and SRM.
- 3S integrated chain keeper
The 3S chain keeper is integrated directly into the bike frame. It's an elegant solution that provides flawless gear shifting even on rough roads and under heavy loads. No more standing on the side of the road, covered in grease, unwedging your dropped chain as competitors race by.
- Blendr Integration: Blendr seamlessly mounts Bontrager Trip computers, Bontrager Ion lights and Garmin computers directly to the handlebars, keeping everything zip tie-free and in its place.
- The lightest road bike line in the world is backed by the cycling world's best warranty. Additionally Emonda has passed all required safety standards, plus Trek's own stringent impact and durability tests, which greatly exceed industry standards. Thus the super lightweight Emonda carries the same generous 275lb rider weight limit as the rest of Trek's road line.
Trek Emonda SL 5 review, road.cc, December 2017 (see here for full details):
"The Trek Emonda SL 5 is a lively and agile road bike with an excellent frameset and a solid component spec. It provides very good value for money.
I'm lucky enough to try out a lot of very high-end bikes (yes, it's a proper job) and riding the Emonda SL 5 makes you wonder whether there's much point spending more than £1,800. Okay, this is still a significant amount of money to spend on a bike but there are a lot of far more expensive models out there that don't provide such a rounded ride.
Most bikes at this price are good but some aren't - what's the word? - sparky. They put in a solid, dependable performance, and you might be hard pushed to point out a weakness, but they don't necessarily fire you up and get adrenaline coursing through your veins. The Emonda SL 5 does. When you're riding this bike there's no sense that 'this is good but if only...'. You just think, 'This is a great bike,' and you crack on with smashing up the next climb. It doesn't look or feel like a mid-range bike, it does a first-rate impression of a far dearer model.
Overall, the Trek Emonda SL 5 is excellent. I had an early issue with one of the wheels but that doesn't detract from the fact that this is a fast and nimble road bike that reacts like something considerably more expensive. Also comfortable and well behaved, it makes you question whether it's worth spending any more money than this.
A fast and nimble road bike that puts in an exceptional performance for its price
